Smart grocery shopping for UCD means focusing on fresh produce, dairy substitutes, and select gluten-free options.

My name is Carol and I've worked with metabolic disorders for 26 years.

So the first thing you should look at when you're buying food is the protein content.

I would recommend focusing on the fresh produce because those foods are both nutritious and tend to be low in protein.

Broccoli and spinach tend to be higher in protein and you need to be counted into the diet.

Another area to look in the grocery store is in the dairy substitutes.

There's now a lot of different substitutes available that are low in protein and some of these products have been made into yogurts and also frozen desserts that can really expand the food choices for a patient.

Another area to look for is the gluten free area.

Not all gluten free products are low in protein, depends on what grain they use.

But some of them are low in protein and it's a good place to take a look.

But we need to read labels.

Look in the Asian section where you can find rice noodles or bean threads.

Besides the meat aisle, there really are low protein foods scattered amongst the entire grocery store.

But again, make sure you don't exceed your protein tolerance.
